Best Digital Banks in Spain: Wise vs Revolut vs N26 (2026)

The fastest way to handle money before and after your move — and the one question that trips everyone up: do you need a Spanish IBAN?

Last updated: August 2026 · Reading time ~5 min

Quick answer

For most expats a digital bank covers day-to-day money before and after moving. Revolut gives you a Spanish IBAN (ES); Wise is best for cheap international transfers and multiple currencies; N26 is a full mobile bank (German IBAN, works across SEPA). IBAN discrimination is illegal in the EU, so a non-ES IBAN must be accepted — but a few Spanish billers still prefer a local one.

Do you actually need a Spanish IBAN?

Legally, no. Since 2019 it's illegal in the EU for a company to refuse a valid SEPA IBAN just because it's from another country ("IBAN discrimination"). In practice, the vast majority of Spanish employers and utilities accept any EU IBAN. But a minority of older Spanish billing systems still choke on a non-ES IBAN — so if you want zero friction, an ES IBAN (Revolut) or a traditional Spanish account is a safe backup.

Which should you pick?

  • Want a Spanish IBAN with no branch visit: Revolut — opens in minutes, gives an ES IBAN.
  • Moving money between countries / currencies: Wise — consistently the cheapest, mid-market exchange rate.
  • Want a polished mobile-banking app: N26 — great UX and budgeting, German IBAN via SEPA.
  • Need a mortgage or heavy bureaucracy: Add a traditional Spanish bank (see relocation services).

What about traditional Spanish banks?

For a mortgage, some official procedures, or if you simply want a local branch, a Spanish bank (Sabadell, Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank) still has its place — and several offer non-resident accounts you can open before you have a NIE. Frequently asked questions

Does Revolut give you a Spanish IBAN?

Yes. Revolut operates a Spanish branch and issues Spanish IBANs (starting ES) to customers registered in Spain — useful for salary payments and direct debits that still prefer a local IBAN.

Can I use Wise as my main bank account in Spain?

Wise is an e-money institution rather than a bank, but many expats use it as a day-to-day account and for cheap transfers. Its euro account details use a Belgian IBAN (BE); since IBAN discrimination is illegal in the EU it should be accepted for salary and direct debits, though a few Spanish billers still prefer an ES IBAN.

Will Spanish utilities accept an N26 or Wise IBAN for direct debit?

Legally they must — refusing a valid SEPA IBAN ('IBAN discrimination') has been illegal in the EU since 2019. In practice most do, but a minority of Spanish billers' systems still glitch on non-ES IBANs, which is why some expats keep a Spanish-IBAN option like Revolut or a traditional Spanish account too.

Do I need a NIE to open a digital bank in Spain?

Usually no — Revolut, Wise and N26 can typically be opened with your passport and an EU/EEA address, often before you move. A NIE is generally needed for a traditional Spanish resident bank account, not for these apps. Always check each provider's current requirements.

Which digital bank is best for moving to Spain?

For a Spanish IBAN with the least hassle, Revolut. For the cheapest international transfers and holding several currencies, Wise. For a full mobile-banking experience, N26. Many expats use a combination — Wise for transfers and Revolut or a Spanish bank for local direct debits.
